Com 12 álbuns no currículo, os suecos do Marduk construíram uma sólida carreira, tendo entre seus maiores trunfos discos como Panzer Division Marduk, Opus Nocturne, World Funeral, entre outros.
Considerado um dos maiores nomes do black metal, a banda realizou, no ano passado, uma bem-sucedida turnê que inclusive passou pelo Brasil, durante o Extreme Hate Festival. O giro foi encerrado de uma forma muito especial, na Europa, com a execução do aclamado álbum Panzer Division Marduk, de 1999. Segundo Evil, guitarrista e membro fundador, esta foi uma forma de apresentar este disco aos fãs mais novos do Marduk.
Durante a passagem da banda por Londres, em dezembro, Evil conversou com a repórter Fabiola Santini e revelou que a banda já se prepara para lançar o sucessor de Serpent Sermon (2012) até o final deste ano. O músico também comentou sobre as passagens do Marduk pela América do Sul e revelou toda a sua admiração pelo Brasil. Confira.

Portal do Inferno: Bem-vindo novamente ao Underworld na sua turnê Panzer Division Marduk 2013. Acompanhamos o anúncio sobre Lars (Broddesson, baterista), o que aconteceu? Pode falar sobre isso?
Morgan “Evil” Steinmeyer Håkansson: Sim, claro que posso, Lars é parte do núcleo da banda. Ele teve problemas com alguns nervos em sua coluna que começaram há quase um ano e afetou a sua forma de tocar. Ele teve uma melhora, mas então, durante os ensaios, foi piorando e os médicos não conseguiam descobrir o que estava errado. Foi ideia do Lars de achar alguém para substitui-lo nessa turnê, veremos quando ele vai voltar. Dissemos que ele tem seu lugar nessa banda, mas que ele precisa de um tempo para se tratar; pode demorar um ano, pode demorar menos, não dá para prever essas coisas, sabe?
P.I.: Espero que ele se recupere logo.
Evil: Sim, estamos em contato o tempo todo para ter certeza. Ele faz parte da banda há muitos anos, parte do line-up sólido que temos desde 2006. É claro que é bem irritante quando esse tipo de coisa acontece, mas não vai melhorar tocando mais e mais, ele precisava parar e se cuidar.
P.I.: Ele é um baterista incrível.
Evil: Ah, sim! Mas o tempo não para no maquinário do Marduk, essas coisas acontecem, é a vida e nós continuamos marchando.
P.I.: Foi difícil encontrar o Fredrik Widigs para substitui-lo?
Evil: Não, de forma alguma. Magnus (“Devo” Andersson), nosso baixista, estava em contato com ele há alguns anos, ele perguntou a Fredrik se estava interessado e ele disse sim. Nós dissemos a ele o que fazer, ensaiamos apenas três vezes e, então, ele se juntou a nós. Ele é um baterista muito competente, sábio tanto musicalmente quanto espiritualmente; nós temos uma conexão.
P.I.: Vamos falar sobre a Panzer Division Marduk 2013 Tour, palavras que são sinônimos de (muita) energia.
Evil: Sim. Fizemos alguns shows até agora e foram fantásticos, assim como os shows que fizemos na turnê do Serpent Sermon. Com o fim dessa turnê se aproximando, pensamos em encerrar o ano com algo especial. Pensamos no Panzer Division, já que muitas músicas desse álbum são sempre pedidas por muitos dos nossos fãs e é, para nós, um grande álbum para tocar ao vivo. É o que gostamos, poder e agressividade. Além disso, 2013 marcou o 15º aniversário do lançamento do disco, então pensamos que seria uma grande ideia e uma grande oportunidade para os fãs mais novos que não viram a turnê antiga. Alguns desses fãs jovens que vieram nos ver ao vivo agora sequer eram nascidos quando o álbum foi lançado.
P.I.: É difícil acreditar que o Panzer Division foi lançado há tanto tempo! É um álbum tão moderno.
Evil: Sim, inacreditável! É o punho na sua cara, é tudo o que se refere essa banda. Achamos que era a forma perfeita de encerrar o ano antes de voltarmos ao estúdio para concluir nosso novo álbum.
P.I.: Antes de falarmos sobre o sucessor do Serpent Sermon: você tinha alguma ideia antes, quando o Panzer Division Marduk foi lançado, que vocês estariam na ativa por tanto tempo?
Evil: Não, absolutamente. Não pensamos tão longe. Durante a jornada da banda pensamos um pouco sobre isso, mas não naquela época. Não pensávamos sequer em um ano adiante, só estávamos focados naquele tempo. Foi apenas há alguns anos que eu me dei conta de que o tempo voa.
P.I.: Serpent Sermon foi o meu lançamento preferido de 2012. Como você se sente sobre essa máquina tão potente agora?
Evil: Serpent Sermon é uma boa representação da banda em 2012. Eu tenho orgulho dele, tenho orgulho de todos os nossos álbuns. O Serpent Sermon ainda está muito fresco na minha cabeça mas, ao mesmo tempo, está um pouco de lado, porque estamos pensando no próximo álbum.
P.I.: Hora de falar sobre ele agora.
Evil: Estamos seguindo em frente. Não ensaiamos nenhum material novo, mas temos escrito muito, temos muitas músicas completas. Quando encerrarmos essa turnê, vamos voltar ao estúdio e dar forma a elas.
P.I.: Eu sempre fui fascinada pelo conteúdo das suas letras.
Evil: As letras são igualmente importantes para a música, tentamos criar uma unidade quando compomos as músicas, para que ambas possam ficar boas juntas.
P.I.: O conceito do novo álbum é baseado na mesma jornada fascinante que você teve no Serpent Sermon ou você vai voltar para a guerra?
Evil: Eu já tenho a ideia na minha cabeça, mas não vou compartilhá-la. As pessoas saberão quando for a hora certa. Depois dessa turnê, vamos ficar reclusos, então as pessoas não ouvirão falar sobre nós até que o novo álbum seja apresentado.
P.I.: Podemos esperar que seja lançado em 2014?
Evil: Espero que sim, mas mais para o final do ano.
P.I.: Você escreve as letras enquanto está em turnê ou precisa de um lugar sem perturbações, longe de tudo?
Evil: Eu não me isolo quando escrevo, mas também não escrevo muito quando estou em turnê, talvez alguns riffs aqui ou ali, já que tem muita coisa acontecendo e sempre temos distrações (risos!).
P.I.: Mencionamos antes a atual formação da banda. Quando eu vejo o Marduk ao vivo, tudo o que posso pensar é sobre como a banda é sólida.
Evil: Nós somos como uma matilha de lobos, nós crescemos juntos. Quando trabalhamos com tanta dedicação juntos, nos tornamos muito próximos.
P.I.: Com tantas bandas boas vindo da Suécia, representando o black metal nos padrões mais elevados, acontece uma competição violenta, tentando ganhar a supremacia?
Evil: Eu não penso em nenhuma competição e, além disso, não me importo com o que os outros estão fazendo. Nós focamos na nossa música e o que as outras bandas fazem não é nosso interesse.
P.I.: O que você diria para um músico jovem hoje se ele/ela decidisse tocar black metal e formar uma banda?
Evil: É difícil dar qualquer conselho: é uma jornada. Digo, você precisa ser sempre genuíno e criar a música com a qual você se sente genuíno e acreditar naquilo que está fazendo, caso contrário, você não deve fazer isso. Para mim, o importante na música é ser honesto apenas para liberar a energia que vem naturalmente. Você nunca deve pensar sobre o que é popular, apenas sobre o que vem de dentro. As pessoas nunca deveriam ter medo de seguir seus próprios caminhos.
P.I.: A Serpent Sermon Tour foi para a América do Sul: como foi para você voltar lá, com a grande audiência que o Marduk tem? Você diria que os públicos de lá são mais selvagens que os daqui, na Europa?
Evil: As coisas para as pessoas na América do Sul são mais difíceis do que aqui na Europa. Há muita opressão religiosa e política, então, é claro que eles tendem a ser mais violentos e agressivos, como parte de sua natureza. É o jeito que eles levam a vida no dia a dia lá, sabe? Para mim, tocar na América do Sul é muito inspirador, toda vez que tocamos lá vemos a agressividade e o entusiasmo das pessoas e isso me mantém mais focado em fazer mais do que estamos fazendo.
P.I.: Algum show recente em particular na América do Sul que você gosta mais?
Evil: Qualquer show no Brasil! O Brasil é sempre especial para nós, toda vez que tocamos lá. Sempre fazemos mais shows no Brasil do que em qualquer outro país da América do Sul, porque é ótimo voltar. E eles têm a melhor comida do mundo, nada bate isso!
Portal do Inferno: Welcome back to the Underworld on your Panzer Division Marduk 2013 tour. We saw the announcement about Lars (Broddesson, drummer) what happened? Is it ok to talk about it?
Morgan “Evil” Steinmeyer Håkansson: Of course it is, Lars is part of the core of the band. He has problems with some nerves on his back that started almost a year ago and affected his playing. He started getting better but then during rehearsals, it got much worse and the doctors could not really figure out what was wrong. It was Lars idea to find someone to fill in for this tour, we’ll see when he is coming back. We told him that he has his place in the band but he should take time to get this fixed; it can take a year, it can take less, you never know with these kind of things you know?
P.I.: I hope he is going to recover soon.
Evil: Yeah, we stay in contact all the time to make sure. He has been part of the band for many years now, part of a steady line-up we have had since 2006. Of course it’s very irritating when these kind of things happen, but it’s not getting better by playing more and more, he had to step out and heal.
P.I.: He is an amazing drummer.
Evil: Oh yeah! But time doesn’t stay still in the Marduk machinery, these things happen, it’s life, and we keep on marching.
P.I.: Was it hard for you to find Fredrik Widigs as a replacement?
Evil: No, not at all. Magnus (“Devo” Andersson) our bass player has been in touch with him for few years, he asked him if he was interested and he said yes. We told him what to do, we only did three rehearsals and then he joined. He is a very competent drummer, both music-wise and spirit-wise: we had a connection.
P.I.: Let’s talk about the Panzer Division Marduk 2013 Tour, two words that are synonymous of (a lot of) energy.
Evil: Yes. We have done few shows so far and they have all been fantastic, just like the shows we did for the Serpent Sermon tour. As that tour was coming to an end, we thought of closing the year with something special. We thought of Panzer Division, as many songs of that album are always requested by a lot of our fans and it’s a great album to play live for us. It’s what we like, power and aggression. Beside, 2013 marks the 15th anniversary of the release of the album, so we thought it was going to be a great idea and a great opportunity for the young fans that did not see the Panzer Division Marduk tour back then. Some of these young fans that came to see us live recently, were just or not even born when the album was released.
P.I.: It’s hard to believe that Panzer Division is that old! It’s such a modern album.
Evil: Yeah, unbelievable! It’s the fist in your face, everything that this band is all about. We thought it was a perfect way to finish the year before we go back to the studio to finish our new album.
P.I.: Before discussing Marduk’s follow up to Serpent Sermon: did you have any idea back then, when Panzer Division Marduk was released, that you were going to be around so long?
Evil: No, not really. We did not think that long. During the journey of the band, we got those thoughts later on, but not back then. We were not even thinking a year ahead, we were just focusing on that time. It was only few years ago I realised that time starts to fly.
P.I.: Serpent Sermon was my favourite release of 2012. How do you feel about such a well oiled machine now?
Evil: Serpent Sermon is a good representation of the band in 2012. I am proud of it, I am proud of all our albums. Serpent Sermon is still so fresh in our mind but at the same time, it’s a bit left behind because we are looking forward to next album.
P.I.: Time to discuss about it now.
Evil: We have been moving ahead. We have not rehearsed any new material but we have been writing a lot, we have completed many songs. When we finish this tour, we go back to the studio and we let them grow.
P.I.: I have been always fascinated by the contents of your lyrics.
Evil: Lyrics are equally important to music, we try to make one unit when we write songs, so that both can work well together.
P.I.: Is the concept of the new album based on the same spellbinding journey you took with Serpent Sermon or are you going back to war?
Evil: I already have it in my mind but I am not going to share. It’s just going to come when it comes and people will see. After this tour, we are going to go into silence so people will not hear from us until the new album is presented.
P.I.: Can we expect a release in 2014?
Evil: I hope so, but probably towards the end.
P.I.: Do you write lyrics when you are on tour or do you need your unperturbed space, far from all?
Evil: I do not really isolate when I write, but I usually do not write a lot when I am on tour, maybe few riffs here and there as there is always so much going on, we are always so distracted (laughs)!
P.I.: Earlier we mentioned the current line-up: when I see Marduk live, all I can think of is solidity within the band.
Evil: We are like a pack of wolves, we grow together. You work so hard together, you become very close.
P.I.: With so many great band coming from Sweden, representing black metal at its highest standards, is there a fierce competition going on, trying to win supremacy?
Evil: I don’t think of any competition and besides I do not care what everybody is doing. We focus on our music and what the other bands are doing is not of our interest.
P.I.: What would you suggest to a young musician today if he/she decided to go out there playing black metal and form a band?
Evil: It’s hard to give any advice: it’s a journey. I mean you should always be genuine and create the music you feel genuine about and believe in what you are doing, otherwise you shouldn’t do it. For me the important thing in music is to be honest only to unleash the energy that comes natural. You should never think about what is popular, only about what comes from within. People should never be afraid to go their own way.
P.I.: The Serpent Sermon Tour reached South America: what was it like for you to go back there, with such a big follow up that Marduk has? Would you say that the audiences there are more wild than here in Europe?
Evil: For people in South America it’s way more tough than here in Europe. There is so much oppression by religion and politics, of course they tend to be more violent and aggressive as it’s part of their nature, it’s the way the everyday life is down there you know? For me, playing live in South America is very inspiring, every time we play there we see the aggression and the enthusiasm of people there and that keeps me more focused in doing more of what we are doing.
P.I.: Any particular recent show in South America that you cherish?
Evil: Any show Brazil! Brazil is always special for us, every time we play there. We always do more shows in Brazil than in any other country in South America, because it’s great to be back. And they have the best food in the world, nothing beats it!
