Formada por Attila Dorn (vocal), Falk Maria Schlegel (órgão), Roel van Helden (bateria), Matthew Greywolf (guitarra) e Charles Greywolf (baixo), a banda Powerwolf comemorou o seu décimo ano de carreira, no ano passado, com o lançamento do álbum Preachers of the Night.
Com suas raízes no power metal, estilo bem usual desenvolvido por bandas alemãs, o Powerwolf se destaca pelas letras baseadas em lendas de lobisomens e vampiros e grande presença de palco. Atualmente, a banda está em turnê na Europa para divulgar o mais recente disco, com várias datas já agendadas em festivais e shows solos. Mas, em conversa com a repórter Fabiola Santini, Falk e Matthew não esconderam a vontade de tocar na América do Sul e comentam o que esperam da plateia brasileira. Confira abaixo:

Portal do Inferno: Vamos começar voltando alguns anos: quando Blood of the Saints foi lançado, em 2011, houve uma explosão do Powerwolf por todos os lugares, em particular na Alemanha, seu país natal.
Falk Maria Schlegel: Estamos juntos há dez anos, Blood of the Saints é nosso quarto álbum, então não aconteceu tão de repente para nós, já havia um grande zumbido sobre o Powerwolf em torno disso. Acho que demos um passo a mais com cada álbum lançado. Finalmente, com Blood of the Saints, chegamos ao ponto em que reunimos uma grande base de fãs que nos permitiu atingir aquela popularidade, crescemos com cada álbum e com cada turnê que fizemos.
Matthew Greywolf: Acho que criamos o nosso próprio estilo ao fazer cada álbum. Muitas pessoas reconhecem que Blood of the Saints é algo especial, isso também tem a ver com o fato de que trouxemos muito para a “performance de palco” nas turnês que divulgaram esse disco.
Falk: Blood of the Saints é, definitivamente, o álbum que nos trouxe novos fãs, já que muitas pessoas que não nos conheciam antes disso, de repente, nos notaram e começaram a ir aos nossos shows. Acho que eles sentiram que queriam experimentar do que se tratava o Powerwolf.
P.I.: O Powerwolf é uma banda de power metal. No entanto, comparada a outras bandas nesse gênero, desenvolveu uma abordagem diferente no sentido de contar histórias nas composições, com bastante emoção e ambientes misteriosos, e com sua mistura de guitarras e órgão que é a assinatura da banda.
Falk: A forma como desenvolvemos nossa sonoridade começou como uma progressão: foi tudo muito natural já que não tivemos que procurar por isso. A forma como soamos hoje é o que acontece quando nós cinco nos juntamos e tocamos. Somos o tipo de banda que nunca planeja o que fazer, não nos reunimos e decidimos como soará o nosso próximo álbum, apenas tocamos o que aparece em nossas mentes estranhas!
Matthew: Nunca escrevemos nossas músicas durante as turnês, precisamos ter uma certa atmosfera ao redor durante o processo de composição, o que não acontece quando estamos na estrada.
P.I.: Vocês têm influência de música clássica?
Falk: Nós não, mas o Attila tem. Eu só toco órgão e aprendi sem estudar.
Matthew: Estranho demais, pois sou um guitarrista, mas a primeira coisa que eu aprendi foi órgão. Depois escolhi tocar guitarra. Mesmo sem estudar música clássica, nós aprendemos como tocar nossos instrumentos de uma forma clássica.
P.I.: Vocês ouvem alguns dos seus compositores alemães clássicos?
Matthew: Para ser honesto, não. Mas temos certeza que o Attila ouve.
P.I.: Vamos passar para seu álbum mais recente, Preachers of the Night, que foi lançado em 2013. Como tem sido lidar com o aspecto ao vivo das músicas que vocês estão tocando na turnê atual?
Falk: Fantástico! Quando escrevemos novas músicas, um aspecto muito importante que sempre vem à tona é: nós realmente queremos tocar essas músicas ao vivo? E é apenas quando todos estamos de acordo é que contínhamos a elaborar as músicas. Isso significa que todas as faixas de Preachers of the Night são músicas que gostaríamos de tocar ao vivo.
Matthew: Concordo, o set list da turnê mais recente poderia ser só com músicas novas do Preachers of the Night mas, é claro, os fãs verão coisas antigas também.
Falk: A cada novo álbum fica mais difícil definir um set list. Estamos muito satisfeitos com a forma que as novas músicas soam nos shows.
P.I.: O lobo é o elemento da banda. Vocês o percebem como uma forma de guia espiritual ou como uma figura poderosa?
Falk: Eu diria que ambos. Para mim, o lobo é a imagem perfeita que representa o heavy metal. É forte e, ao mesmo tempo, místico.
P.I.: Vocês estão fazendo shows já há muitos anos, em locais pequenos como The Underworld (Londres) e festivais grandes como o Wacken Open Air. Vocês têm algum tipo de ritual antes de cada show? Se sim, ele muda de acordo com o lugar que vocês tocam?
Falk: Sim, temos rituais, mas eles nunca mudam. Primeiro, tocamos alguma música especial, coisas bestas, tipo… David Hasselhoff… (risos!).
P.I.:… David Hasselhoff, sério?
Falk: Sim, e isso não é um segredo.
Matthew: Nós também gostamos de tocar Skid Row, músicas tipo Youth Gone Wild...
P.I.: … melhor…
Falk: E Bon Jovi… apenas algumas músicas que nos empolgam. Então, fazemos um círculo e uivamos, bem antes de entrarmos no palco. A energia do círculo toma conta de cada um de nós. É muito importante e faz com quue todos se sintam no mesmo nível para dar uma grande performance ao vivo toda vez. Começamos esse ritual no nosso primeiro show e mantemos desde então.
P.I.: Tem algum país em particular que vocês notaram uma grande ligação com o seu público?
Falk: É difícil dizer, já que descobrimos em cada país que nossos fãs são demais. Por exemplo, foi apenas recentemente que tivemos nosso primeiro show como headliners em Paris e foi absolutamente INCRÍVEL! Ficamos tão surpresos em ver como muitas pessoas estavam cantando junto com as melodias de guitarra!
Matthew: Seria legal tocar na América do Sul.
P.I.: Vocês não foram para lá ainda…
Falk: Ainda não.
P.I.: O que vocês esperariam se fizessem uma turnê no Brasil?
Falk: Eu acho que o público brasileiro seria bem diferente de muitos europeus. As pessoas no Brasil são conhecidas por serem bem empolgadas, do jeito que gostamos. Seria um verdadeiro desafio para nós. Sabemos que haverá um ponto no futuro em que iremos à América do Sul! Temos uma grande base de fãs lá e eles estão esperando…
Portal do Inferno: Let’s start by going back few years: when Blood of the Saints was released in 2011, there was a Powerwolf explosion everywhere, particularly in Germany, your home country.
Falk Maria Schlegel: We have been together for ten years now, Blood of the Saints is our fourth album so it did not happen so suddenly for us, there was already a big buzz about Powerwolf going around prior to that. I guess that we took a step up with each album we released. Finally with Blood of the Saints we got to the point where we gathered a big fan base which allowed us to reach that popularity, growing with every album and every tour we did.
Matthew Greywolf: I think that we created our own style with the making of each album. Many people recognize that Blood of the Saints is something special, it also had to do with the fact that we brought lot of “stage acting” in the tours that supported the album.
Falk: Blood of the Saints is definitely the album that brought us new fans, as many people that did not know us before that, suddenly noticed us and started coming to our shows. I guess they felt they wanted to experience what the hell Powerwolf was about.
P.I.: Powerwolf is a power metal band. However, compared to other bands within this gender, Powerwolf has developed a unique approach in the storytelling side of song writing, thrillingly topped up with eerie ambiences created but your signature blend of guitars and organ.
Falk: The way we developed our sound started as a progression: it was all very natural as we did not have to search for it. The way we sound today is what happens when the five of us come together and play music. We are the type of band that never plans what to do, we do not sit down and decide how our next album is going to sound like, we just play what comes out of our strange minds!
Matthew: We never write new songs on tour, we need to have a certain atmosphere around us during the writing process, which does not happen when you are on the road.
P.I.: Do you have a classic music background?
Falk: We do not, but Attila has. I am just able to play organ, I learned that without studying.
Matthew: Strange enough, being the guitar player, I first learned to play organ. I then chose to play guitar. Even if we did not study classic music, we learned how to play our instrument the classic way.
P.I.: Do you listen to any of your German classics?
Matthew: To be honest…. We don’t… but we are pretty sure Attila does.
P.I.: Let’s move to your latest album, Preachers of the Night which was released in 2013. How has it been coping with the live aspect of the songs you have being playing on your recent tour?
Falk: Fantastic! When we write new songs, a very important aspect that always comes to our mind is: would we really like to play these songs live? It’s only when we are all in agreement, that we then continue and elaborate those songs. This means that all the tracks in Preachers of the Night are all songs that we would like to play live.
Matthew: I agree, the set-list of the most recent tour could all be about new songs from Preachers of the Night but of course fans come and see for the old stuff as well…
Falk: With every new album, it’s getting harder and harder for us to define the set-list. We are very pleased with the way the new songs sound live.
P.I.: The wolf is your element. Do you perceive it as a form of spiritual guidance or of a powerful figure?
Falk: I would say it’s neither. For me the wolf is just the perfect image that represents heavy metal. It’s strong but at the same time mystical.
P.I.: You have been playing live for several years now, in small venues like The Underworld here in London and at massive festivals like Wacken Open Air. Do you have any sort of ritual before each show and if so, does it change according to where you play?
Falk: Yes we do have rituals but they never change. First of all, we do play some special music, very silly stuff like…. David Hasselhoff… (laughs!)
P.I.: …. David Hasselhoff really?
Falk: Yeah, and it’s not a secret.
Matthew: We also like to play Skid Row, songs like Youth Gone Wild…
P.I.: … Better….
Falk: And Bon Jovi… just some music to push ourselves. Then we build a circle and howl, right before we go on stage. The energy of the circle takes over each of us. It’s very important, as it makes us feel we are all at the same level to give a great live performance every time. We started this ritual with our first show and we have kept it ever since.
P.I.: Is there any particular country you noticed a strong bond with your audience?
Falk: It’s hard to say as we find that in every country fans are just great. For instance it’s only recently that we had our first headlining show in Paris and it was absolutely AMAZING! We were so surprised to see how many people were singing along the guitar melodies!
Matthew: It would be nice to play in South America.
P.I.: You have not been out there yet…
Falk: Not yet.
P.I.: What would you expect if toured in Brazil?
Falk: I think the Brazilian audience would be very different from any European one. People in Brazil are known to be very wild, the way we like it. It would be a real challenge for us. We know there will be a point in the future when we go to South America! We have a big follow up there, fans are waiting…
